Newborn Hearing Screening

Give Your Baby the Best Start with Early Hearing Screening

At Golden Hearing & Balance Center in Woodbridge, Vaughan, we provide newborn hearing screening in a calm, comfortable, and family-friendly environment. Early detection of hearing loss is one of the most important steps in supporting your baby’s speech, language, and overall development.

Most babies hear normally, but some infants are born with hearing loss even when they appear healthy. Because hearing loss cannot be detected by simply watching your baby respond to sounds, a professional hearing screening is recommended shortly after birth.

Newborn Hearing Screening

Why Is Newborn Hearing Screening Important?

The first few months of life are a critical period for your baby’s brain, hearing, and language development. From the moment they are born, babies begin learning by listening to the voices of their parents, caregivers, and the sounds around them. These early listening experiences provide the foundation for speech, language, communication, learning, and social development.

Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions present at birth. Approximately 2 out of every 1,000 babies are born with permanent hearing loss, and another 2 out of every 1,000 children develop hearing loss by the age of five. Because hearing loss is often invisible, many babies with hearing difficulties appear healthy and may respond to some sounds, making it difficult for parents to recognize a problem without screening.

Without early hearing screening, hearing loss may go undetected until speech and language delays become noticeable, often after the most important period for language development has already begun to pass.

Newborn hearing screening helps identify hearing loss within the first days or weeks of life. If a hearing concern is detected, further diagnostic testing can confirm the diagnosis, allowing appropriate intervention to begin as early as possible. Early support may include ongoing hearing assessments, hearing technology when appropriate, speech and language therapy, and family-centered guidance to help your child achieve their full communication potential.

Research has consistently shown that babies whose hearing loss is identified and managed before six months of age develop significantly better speech, language, communication, and literacy skills than children whose hearing loss is diagnosed later. Early intervention also supports cognitive development, academic achievement, and social-emotional well-being throughout childhood.

A newborn hearing screening is quick, safe, painless, and non-invasive. Most babies sleep comfortably throughout the test, which usually takes only a few minutes. The screening provides valuable reassurance when hearing is normal and ensures that any concerns are identified and addressed as early as possible.

At Golden Hearing & Balance Center, we are committed to providing compassionate, family-centered hearing care. Our goal is to give every child the best possible start in life by identifying hearing concerns early and supporting healthy speech, language, and communication development from the very beginning.

Who Should Have a Hearing Screening?

Newborn hearing screening is recommended for:

  • All newborn babies
  • Babies who missed hospital screening
  • Babies who require a repeat screening
  • Infants born at home
  • Families seeking reassurance about their baby’s hearing

Your physician or midwife may also recommend screening if your baby has certain risk factors for hearing loss.

What Happens During the Screening?

The hearing screening is:

  • Safe
  • Quick
  • Comfortable
  • Non-invasive
  • Usually completed while your baby is sleeping or resting quietly

A tiny soft ear tip is gently placed in your baby’s ear to measure how the inner ear responds to sound.

The test usually takes only a few minutes.

What Do the Results Mean?

Pass

A “Pass” result means your baby’s hearing responses were within normal limits at the time of testing.

Refer

A “Refer” result does not necessarily mean your baby has hearing loss.

Many babies receive a refer result because of:

  • Temporary fluid in the ear
  • Vernix remaining in the ear canal
  • Baby movement during testing
  • Background noise

If additional testing is recommended, we will explain the next steps and arrange appropriate follow-up.
